
The Seattle Orthopaedic and Fracture Clinic extends a warm welcome to our new associate, Dr. Preston J. Phillips. Dr. Phillips joins us after making a long cross country trip from Boston, Massachusetts. He is a cum laude graduate of Harvard Medical School. While at Harvard he earned the honor of being awarded the Commonwealth Fellowship , an American Heart Association Fellowship, the Richard Allen Williams Scholarship, and was elected Harvard Medical School Class Marshal.
To the surprise and amazement of his classmates, he left Harvard and received residency training in general and orthopaedic surgery at Yale University School of Medicine and Yale New Haven Hospital. He stayed on at Yale and served as Chief Resident and Instructor in Orthopaedic Surgery. During his tenure at Yale he was appointed: to the Medical Board of Yale New Haven Hospital, as an associate of the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library, and the Visiting Fellow to the Yaroslavl Medical Institute / "Yale Goodwill Ambassador for Health Care," Yaroslavl, Russia. He was a founding member of the Yale Minority Medical Association and was instrumental to the organization of multiple community service and urban health programs. For these activities he was awarded both American Medical Association/Glaxo and American Medical Association/Burroughs - Wellcome Leadership Awards.
He then returned to Harvard as the Daniel E. Hogan Spine Fellow at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. During his second stint at Harvard, he served on the faculty as an Instructor and Associate in Orthopaedics. He was honored by being selected as a Boston Fellow and as The Whitehouse Fellowships Program Regional Finalist.
Prior to his medical career he attended and graduated with honors from Emory University, earning the unique distinction of being simultaneously awarded a B.S. Chemistry, B.S. Theology and an M.S. Organic Chemistry during his four year tenure.
Dr. Phillips has a special interest in the care of patients with spinal disorders (both non-operative and operative approaches), including neck, low back, thoracic spine and scoliosis. He believes in fully engaging each patient as an active member of the 'team' of persons involved in the treatment plan. He is a firm supporter of making every effort to return patients to their normal quality of life. His background in theology has allowed him to appreciate the positive relationship between spirituality and healing. His training in spine surgery began at Yale and he returned to Harvard for advanced training in the care of the spine.
In addition to fracture surgery, Dr. Phillips also has a strong interest in the treatment of joint disorders. He has received extensive training in the treatment various joint pathologies and performance of joint preservation and reconstructive procedures (i.e., improving joint alignment, stability and/or joint replacement surgery).
Dr. Phillips has written and published multiple scientific abstracts and manuscripts. He has lectured at multiple local and national forums/meetings. He is a Captain in the United States Air Force Reserves, Medical Corps. A native of Michigan, Dr. Phillips now makes his home in the Seattle, Washington area with his wife and their three children.
