Dr. Peterson is a Seattle native, having grown up on Mercer Island. He graduated from Mercer Island High School in 1982. He attended Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. While there, he became interested in athletic injuries through his time spent as a member of the crew team. He was a 3-year varsity letter man. Rowing also allowed him to meet his future wife, Nancy, a member of the woman's team.

Dr. Peterson graduated magna cum lauda and was inducted in Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society during his senior year.

Following college, Dr. Peterson returned to Seattle where he attended the University of Washington School of Medicine. He graduated with "high honors". He was involved in several research projects during his time at the University of Washington, including research in the orthopaedic and internal medicine fields.

He was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha, a prestigious medical school honor society during his third year of training.

Dr. Peterson then took his orthopaedic internship and residency training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, widely regarded as one of the premier orthopaedic institutions in the world. During his time there, he was involved in many research projects publishing articles in several national orthopaedic journals and presenting papers at many international and national orthopaedic meetings.

Upon completion of his residency training in 1995, Dr. Peterson received a one- year specialty fellowship in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. During his time there, he was a team physician for the New York Mets, New York Giants, and St. John's University. This gave him a wide exposure to all forms of injuries and athletes, as well as complex shoulder problems and reconstructions.

Upon completion of his fellowship, Dr. Peterson returned to join SOFC. He began his practice in the summer of 1996.

He, his wife, Nancy, and their son, Sam and daughter, Gretchen, are very happy to be back in their native Northwest on a permanent basis.

While Dr. Peterson has a special interest in sports medicine and shoulder surgery, he has had extensive experience in general orthopaedics, trauma and fracture surgery, and total joint replacement, including joint replacement of the hip, knee, shoulder and elbow.
